UK announces fall in net immigration figure

UK announces fall in net immigration figure

The latest figures show that there has been a significant drop in the net level of immigration into the UK. The net immigration figure is reached by calculating the number of immigrants over a given period and then subtracting the number of people leaving the country permanently. In the year to September 2012, 500,000 people immigrated and 347,000 left so the net immigration figure was 153,000. This is 89,000 lower than the 242,000 figure for the year to September 2011; 242,000.
At the UK's last general election in 2010, The UK's current Prime Minister David Cameron promised that he would cut immigration if he was elected. Mr Cameron did become the Prime Minister at the head of a Coalition government. The Coalition said it would reduce the UK's net immigration figure from its then level, about 260,000 per year, to 'tens of thousands' annually. This was taken to mean 'fewer than 100,000'. These latest figures show that the government has made some progress towards that goal. The net immigration figure is the lowest since 2003.
But educationalists expressed concern that a more detailed analysis of the figures shows that much of this drop has been caused by a fall in the number of overseas students coming to study in the UK with Tier 4 student visas. The number of students arriving in the UK to study with Tier 4 student visas fell by over 50,000 from 246,000 to 190,000.
In the past, the government has claimed that its attempts to crack down on immigration have forced 'bogus colleges' to close down but have not harmed the UK's university education sector. In April 2013, immigration minister Mark Harper told an online education magazine, The Pie, last month that the government had closed down colleges that sold 'immigration not education' but said that the numbers of university students coming to the UK had actually risen slightly.

Australia to double fee for '457' temporary work visa in July

Australia to double fee for '457' temporary work visa in July

It has been announced that the fee for each Australian temporary work '457' visa will rise from AUS$455 to AUS$900 from 1st July 2013. The announcement was made by the Australian Treasurer (as the Finance Minister is called in Australia), Wayne Swan as part of his 2013 budget. The change is expected to raise nearly $200m in revenue for the government over the next four years.
Mr Swan delivered his budget on Tuesday 14th May 2013. He said that Australia faced tough times and austerity because of a AUS$17bn hole in the country's finances. The Australian government announced in March that, over the same four year period, it would give $3.4m to the Australian Fair Work Ombudsman to ensure that Australian employers do not abuse the 457 visa system.
Duncan Fraser, president of the Australian National Farmers Federation has said that the increase is likely to make it harder for Australian agriculture to get the skilled labour it needs. He told the Australian broadcaster ABC that the change would make it difficult to 'get skills out to country areas where we can't source those skills locally'.

UK government announces immigration reform bill

The UK government says that it intends to pass legislation that they say will encourage people who want to contribute to the country but discourage those who want to take advantage of the UK's social benefits. The proposed legislation was revealed by Queen Elizabeth II at the state opening of parliament in Westminster on Wednesday 8th May 2013.

The State Opening of Parliament is an annual event at which the monarch reads a speech outlining her government's legislative agenda for the coming year. This year, the immigration bill was one of the major announcements in the seven minute long speech. The speech contained commitments from the government to pass fifteen laws which will deal with matters as diverse as pensions, social care, job creation and immigration.

The Queen announced that the immigration bill would ensure that the UK 'attracts those who will contribute and deters those who will not'. The bill will do the following if it becomes law:
Restrict access to the NHS for foreign nationals in the UK
Require visitors to the UK to make a contribution towards the costs of any treatment they receive from the NHS
Introduce bigger fines for firms which employ foreign workers who do not have the right to work in the UK
Oblige private landlords to check the immigration status of prospective tenants before they rent a property. A failure to do so may result in hefty fines
Require the courts, when considering applications from foreign criminals to remain in the UK under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, to consider the impact on the victims and on society generally. Article 8 says that everyone has the right to family life. This has been interpreted by the courts in such a way that some foreign criminals have been allowed to stay in the UK because they have fathered a child even after they have committed serious offences.

We can help skilled candidates obtain UK Tier 2 (General) visas!

Are you in the UK on a Tier 1 (Post Study Work) visa? Is that visa approaching its expiry date? Do you want to stay in the UK?

If you are a professional with expertise in a skilled occupation, we may be able to help.

The Tier 1 (Post Study Work) visa was popular among international students at UK universities. It allowed them to stay and work in the UK for two years after graduation. During this period, they were allowed to work. About 45,000 applications were processed every year. Sadly, the category was closed to new entrants on 6th April 2012 by the UK government who were looking to cut immigration numbers.

However, the closure of the Tier 1 Post Study Work visa has made some skills shortages in the UK even more acute than before. Many UK employers are looking to recruit skilled workers from overseas to fill these vacancies. We have well-paid permanent and contract jobs with UK employers for the right candidates.

Tier 1 (Post Study Work) visa holders should call

If you are currently in the UK with a Tier 1 (Post Study Work) visa and are a skilled worker in one of the fields above, we may be able to help. We have teamed up with UK employers who are able to offer sponsorship to suitable candidates.
If you believe that this applies to you, then give us a call on +44 (0) 207 - 993 - 4762 or contact us by email at info@global-migrate.com. and we will arrange for a full assessment.

To qualify for a UK Tier 2 (General) visa, you must be able to score 70 points under the UK's points-based visa system. To do this you must:

Have a valid certificate of sponsorship from a registered UK employer
Be earning more than £20,300 a year
Be able to prove your English language ability (Your UK degree will be accepted as proof)
Satisfy the maintenance requirements.

We can help with Tier 2 (General) applications
